I am Mr. Beck and I wanted to share a little bit about me. I was born and raised in Nyssa. I attended Nyssa High School where I enjoyed playing sports and being a friend to all. I served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 2000 to 2002 in Venezuela. I attended college at Ricks/BYU-Idaho where I graduated with a bachelor's degree in Spanish Education with a Health Education Minor in December, 2005. My wife and I have four kids and we live in Nyssa. I finished my Master's Degree in October, 2012 in Teacher Leadership. I love teaching and look forward to making more changes in my teaching techniques to better improve my student's learning and speaking of the Spanish language.
I have been to Costa Rica twice now! First, with two students during the Summer of 2013 where we enjoyed learning about their culture and biodiversity. Second, with 5 students in the Summer of 2017 where we got to learn about the importance of coffee, tourism, and their geography/geology.
Students can expect to hear a lot of Spanish, but more importantly, speak a lot of Spanish. The purpose of taking a foreign language is to learn to speak it! I expect my students to speak as much as they can, for that is the way that I learned it, and I know it is the easiest way to learn a foreign language. Even though it is the hardest part of a language to pick up.
Note to the parents-be willing to practice with your child. The more they study and practice, the more they will learn and retain.
